In Disney's 1959 film, Princess Aurora is cursed by Maleficent to die on her sixteenth birthday by pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. Three kind fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, manage to lift the curse's power to endless sleep. Still, the King and Queen fear for their daughter's life and task the fairies with protecting Aurora deep in the forest to nullify the curse. When Aurora is lulled into pricking her finger, it's Prince Phillip who defeats Maleficent and breaks the curse with true love's kiss.
